Port Loko-LUNSAR (80km, 50 miles)

Points of interest:

Cycling conditions: mostly paved, rolling

Lunsar, Sierra Leone Recent highway improvement projects have improved the road from Port Loko to Lunsar.  Hopefully it will receive the ongoing attention that is required so that it doesn't again grow potholes as wide as the road.

From the road, Lunsar is spread out -- suburban looking -- and lacks much of a center.  There is a small cluster of markets near the gas station and bar, but beyond that the roadside town is  linear.  Off to the south of the highway is more of a town with a grid of streets, some schools, a Catholic Hospital and other businesses.  At this point the obvious economic activity is agriculture; rice and oil palm.  The new investment in mining should also give the town a boost in the coming years.  This will return it to it's roots, which was mining from the 1930's to 1975.

Lunsar is the home of the Village Bicycle Project's Sierra Leone program.
