Canal and koker (or sluice gate). A koker is the gate at the end of the canal. Much of coastal Guyana is below sea level and protected by dikes. At low tide the koker can be opened and water will drain through the dike and into the sea. The koker needs to be closed at high tide or the land will be flooded with sea water. | |
