Photo essay: Rolling the Islands of the Salish Sea

The scenes of sea and sky, rugged mountains, multi-green high forest and receding layers of islands makes the Salish Sea (Puget Sound and waters around the San Juan and Gulf Islands) make for beautiful bicycle touring even if you don't know the history and cultural context of every hill, bay, stream, forest plant, town and building.  But the more you know about the story of the land the more it comes alive, and the more a bike ride is not a bike but a journey through history, culture and the spirit of creation.  Hopefully the photo essays will lift the veil of this intriguing world a little

Comments, corrections, clarification and supplemental information are welcome.

* Approx. translation: "Rolling the hoop through the land."  Sbubi is a traditional Salish "rolling the hoop" game. When Capt Vancouver first visited, the children tried rolling hard tack they got from his ship's crew. For our purpose, we will be rolling bicycle wheels. Swatixwtud is the Lushootseed word for "earth".  Lushootseed is the indigenous language of the local Salish people.
