by David Mozer [An introduction and overview to travel in Africa is available by clicking here. This section has not been comprehensively updated since 2015.] Because most of the roads in the country are unpaved or in disrepair, rains are a critical factor in travel - long distance travel is impossible many months of the year. The driest period is usually July/August. Except in the eastern highlands temperatures are hot and humid year around. Even when you can get through, public accommodations of all kinds are not well spaced for cycling. Carry plenty of food and water and plan to bivouac in villages and the bush. Adding to the challenges of travel in Zaire are issues of security of your personal property - stories of problems are common. Links of Interest: |
